Second Reminder- The Cousins are coming!

We Need Your Reservation for the Gathering
Cousins: We need you to help us by sending in your registration. For planning purposes. we need the final count   It’s not too late, so send it on in.  Our Dutch Cousins President, Chris Canine, has hit the ball out of the park in finding the most beautiful, interesting, and affordable venue for our DC Reunion this September.

A reminder:  We’ll have a silent auction to benefit Old Mud and also defray costs to the Cousins for the gatherings.  Please bring items of interest (Dutch or not) to the gathering to benefit your organization.

Hello Cousins!
A reminder for our Thursday evening tour any time between 4:30 & 6:30 of the Rosemary Clooney Home.

Please add to your plans – one of our own cousins, Dr. Steve Henry, former KY Lt. Governor and his wife,  Heather French Henry, former Miss America,  are giving us the opportunity to tour Rosemary Clooney’s home just a few miles down the road from our gathering.

Steve and Heather have owned Rosemary’s home for the past 20 years. The non-profit foundation was established to preserve the legacy of Rosemary Clooney, her home and to house memorabilia from her life and career.

In her home you will see childhood photos, her life as a wife, mother of 5 children and numerous grandchildren,  the largest collection of ‘White Christmas’ memorabilia anywhere in the world, her bedroom as it was while she lived there, costumes worn by Bing, Bob, Vera & Rosemary herself and movies co-starring Bob Hope, Guy Mitchell & Jose Ferrer.

This is a wonderful opportunity Steve and Heather are offering us. We also appreciate this chance to see another piece of history during our time before the gathering.

You may drop in anytime between 4:30 & 6:30 THURSDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 12th.

Please send an email, leave a message or state somewhere on your registration form, to let me know you plan to attend this  “THURSDAY”  event.

Thank you!

When Wives Are (Dutch) Cousins

My biological grandmother Ada Ardella Pierce (1916-1950) died suddenly shorty after her 34th birthday. She left her husband Joseph Riley Young (1910-1975) with three children, my mother the youngest at only 21 months old. About two years later, my grandfather Joe remarried, to a widow woman named Dona Rhea Fentress (1909-1996). What I did not realize until the last year or so is that both my grandmothers, biological and step, were cousins with some Low Dutch heritage.

In short, my real grandmother Ardella was a 3rd great granddaughter of “Father Henry” Banta through his second wife Antjin. Specifically, the line back goes Ardella>>Harvey A. Pierce and Olive E. Runyon>>George H. Pierce and Louisa Cox>>George R. Pierce and Mahala Shively>>Henry Shively and Mary Banta>>Father Henry and Antjin Demarest. This is a well documented line, all post 1800 marriage licenses on file in Orange and Martin counties in southern Indiana, and the graves of all from Henry and Mary down to Ardella lie in Orange County. Ardella was raised near French Lick, Indiana. In short, my step grandmother Dona was the daughter of Laura Alice Westerfield (1873-1951) of Kentucky. Dona was raised in the Spring Lick and Caneyville areas of Kentucky, about 90 miles due south of French Lick. She made it across the river sometime before 1930. I did not spend as much time on Dona’s line as Ardella’s, and am basing this info primarily on internet research.
Apparently, Dona was a 4th great granddaughter of Jacobus Westerfield and Maria Demarest. So Ardella and Dona descend from Demarest sisters! I believe this makes Ardella and Dona 5th cousins once removed.

Ardella and Dona, as far as I know, never met. I am not sure if either knew they had Low Dutch ancestry. My grandfather had no idea that his wives were distant cousins, Dutch Cousins! I have told Dona’s youngest daughter about this and the Westerfield massacre marker near Shepherdsville. Early Kentucky genealogy is quite interesting!

Hi Cousins,

On Friday afternoon of the gathering we will be having an educational session on the songs of the American Revolution by the SAR fife and drum corps!

Scott Giltner of the Governor Isaac Shelby, Sons of the American Revolution will be talking to us about the many songs that were played during the war!  How fitting since we will be at Blue Licks which was considered the last major battle!

We will be playing these songs as he tells us the history of them!  Everyone can close their eyes and get a feel for what it must have been like, so long ago, as you marched out to the battle field!
