Heritage Displays

One of the great happenings at the Gathering of the Dutch Cousins of Kentucky is the sharing of our family histories. One of the great ways to tell about your family is through the Heritage Displays.

The Heritage displays are probably one of the most personal activities at the Dutch Cousins Gathering. They provide a visual history. Some provide research material for you to peruse. Some are just fun and unique; there are no set rules on how you do your table.
Everyone who enters will receive a certificate, and a panel of judges will choose the Best Display 2024 award. The First Place Award is a very special surprise this year and we hope to have lots of participation. The table size is about 6 feet by 1½ feet.  Space is always limited, so your display needs to be:FreestandingFocusedConciseThink VerticalHandouts Are Always A PlusSee examples of a previous displays on the Dutch Cousins webpage or in the photo above.

Table set up begins Friday, Sept. 13th at 8:00 a.m.
Takedown starts at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept 14th and ends by 5:00 p.m.

Please register with Mary Jo Gohmann at maryjo4036@gmail.com  to reserve space for your family heritage display.  We will need Your NameYour Dutch Family NameTitle of your display If you have any questions or concerns include those in your e-mail and I’ll get back to you.

Pleasureville Dutch Tract Cemetery
I just came across this article “Dutch Tract Cem. to take over disputed graveyard” from last year:
https://www.pmg-ky1.com/sentinel_news/dutch-tract-cem-to-take-over-disputed-graveyard/article_3458383b-b7fc-559c-b8ca-1428d101b781.html

I had a chance to visit the cemetery two years ago after the last gathering and did notice what appeared to be a separate cemetery fenced off to the side. I didn’t think much about it at the time.

The article calls this the “Ditto” Cemetery while Findagrave calls it the “Pleasureville Colored Cemetery” (2190222), in Shelby County. It shows the “Dutch Tract Cemetery” (1183228) in Henry County.

The article says: “Further research revealed that there were some White people buried there also with the surname of Bonta/Banta, part of the original Low Dutch Company.”  Findagrave lists 144 burials.  I only see one of those: William H. C. Banta (1843 – 1862), son of Henry G. and Bettie Banta.I also found there – very unexpectedly –  “Schuck”, Margaret Williams Shuck (1890-1931) and Maria Shuck Gibson (1877-1936). Shuck (Andrew) is my line.  Apparently the “Schuck” is a standing surname stone with no individual inscription.  Margaret does not have a separate stone and her information is from cemetery records. Research shows that Margaret and her husband Ernest M. Shuck/Schuck were Colored and from 1910 through at least 1930 were living in Louisville.  Maria was also Black and had 17 children.

Looking forward to seeing everyone in September.

Thanks for keeping me informed. I enjoy reading all the history of various families. Unfortunately, I am not related to any of the Banta’s who went to Kentucky. I am the daughter of MIldred Banta Quinn who was born in Orange, NJ and moved to CT with her father Alfred C Banta. I won’t be able to attend your gathering this year. I so enjoyed our last one about four years ago. Good luck with your event.
