Hi Janice…if you remember I’m on the DAG and I performed this laser scan and created this Matterport 3D Tour of the Old Mud Meeting House. I’m not sure if you’ve seen it…it’s not totally finished yet as I’m waiting for more content from Amelie and her contacts. I can always add content as videos, text, URL links later and I’d be happy to work on it for the Cousins…Best, James

I know some of us may have heard a tale about our Patriot ancestors that are a part of the Low Dutch community.  Today I would like to share a story of the Canine family patriot grandfather Sgt. Peter Canine/Carnine of New Jersey.
The story begins with our grandfather living with Captain Verbrycke at the time of the Declaration of Independence.  In the application for pension his wife gives oath,  “He was living in the family of William Verbricke and acting as a clerk for him in his store.”  “He continued to live with Captain/later Major Verbrycke for two or three years after the marriage.”
Major Verbryke’s widow in 1837 when applying for a pension, recalls a “skirmish at Millstone, the latter of which was only twelve miles from their residence.  Owing as she was then informed of the activity of her husband in the service there an attempt made by some British troops to surprise and take her husband prisoner whilst he was at home on leave. He, however, made his escape and our house was plundered by them of many articles of property.”
John Tuney giving deposition in the same application states, “he distinctly recalls that the British made an effort to take the Captain prisoner by attacking his house in the night, but the Captain made his escape and went over to his father-in-laws Mr. Lows and took with him his little son.
John Tuney also gave testimony in the application for Peter Canine for a Revolutionary War Pension.  “This Deponent recollect that the British came to the house of s’d Canine after Capt. Verbrycke and plundered and took Blankets & Knapsacks and filled their canteens with rum, and threatened to kill the said Canine.”
By the grace and mercy of God they did not kill our grandfather that night!   It speaks to the fact we are all miracles and the events of history are woven throughout time past, present and future!
What a blessing it is to have this tidbit of history documented  to dream and imagine about, that took place so long ago!
Your cousin,

Chris Canine

We will bring it with us September 16th.  Unfortunately, I cannot find the
picture of it on my phone, it is probably 20″ by 24″.

Editor: Thank you, Anne & Kay!  We are happy to have all donations for the silent auction.

Dutch connection:
I’m descended from Hendrick Banta and Antjin Demarest, who led a Dutch migration to the Low Dutch Tract of Kentucky. (Also descended from Joseph Boone, Jr., a cousin of Daniel Boone.) My grandparents migrated from Kentucky to Indiana, then my Dad joined the military and settled in Maryland after living all over the world. I have met two other descendants of Epke Jakobs (Banta) over the years. There are over 70,000 of us, according to one estimate.
