Eddie, Russ & Old Mud

Dear Dutch Cousins,

We are excited about the speakers we will enjoy at the Dutch Cousins Gathering September 16-18, 2022, at the Harold Benson Farm, at Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Kentucky.

At 6:00 Saturday, our keynote speaker Eddie Price will present, “Homemaking on the Frontier.” A retired history teacher, Mr. Price will take us on a journey back to 1811 where we will experience homemaking on the Kentucky frontier – “from the ground up.” Beginning with clearing timberland, fencing off pastures and planting crops, he will take us through building the home. We will learn how frontier folk cultivated and preserved their food, made their clothes, and doctored their families.

We hope you can experience this fun informative presentation with us!
Sincerely,
Mary Jo Gohmann

Our Friday evening keynote speaker, Russell Gasero: “Something to Chew On: A Story About Archives”

Russell Gasero is Archivist Emeritus to the Reformed Church in America (the former Dutch Reformed Church of the 17th-19th centuries). He retired from that position in June 2020 after 42 years of service. What are archives? Why do we keep records? Is food a record? Should food even be preserved?  These and other questions will be discussed by Russell in his presentation detailing the establishment and growth of the Archives of the Reformed Church in America.

We have all used archives in our research, but they are so much more than just family history resources. Russell will talk about the nature of the archival task and why archives are important. He will also touch on food in archives—not eating at your desk or the processing table, but the preservation of food in the archives.

Russell has been a frequent presenter and held leadership positions in various regional and national historical organizations and was among the first class of members in the Academy of Certified Archivists.
